Mandated topics

  • Medical ethics and/or professional responsibility: 2 of the 24 formal hours (may include risk management, domestic abuse, or child abuse courses)
  • Human trafficking prevention: course required as part of the ethics/professional-responsibility requirement
  • Safe and effective pain management related to prescribing opioids and other controlled substances: at least 2 hours in each of the first two renewal periods after initial licensure, then every 8 years, for licensees with direct patient care (Tex. Admin Code tit 3 § 156.055)
  • Pain management: 10 hours annually for licensees practicing in pain management clinics (TMB Rule 172.3)
  • Nutrition training: Board-determined hours per Texas Nutrition Advisory Committee guidelines — Board rules mandated eff. 2025-09-01 (2025 SB 25)
